WE STAND AND SPEAK TOGETHER AGAINST THE BARRENESS OF POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES IN NIGERIA’S PRACTICE OF DEMOCRACY.

Nigeria / 24 nov 2018 - 24 nov 2018

Undoubtedly, Nigerian political parties are suffering from barrenness of ideologies; an important vehicle of a political party that sustains the practice of democracy. This is totally different from what is obtainable in advance democracies. Currently, it is only in Nigeria that a candidate can work against his political party simply because he failed to secure party ticket to contest a certain political position leading to incessant cross carpeting; commonly known as defection. Most politicians operating in Nigeria’s current democracy are self-serving money makers who sought power only for personal and ethnic enrichment without any reference to ideology - just a vague commitment to national unity and democratic ideals.

Similarly, most powerful Nigeria’s ruling elites are deliberately promoting the social fragmentation that creates, feeds and reinforces religious and ethnic identities to the exclusion of civic and national identities in the practice of democracy. This situation breeds mutual distrusts and tensions, culminating into frequent ethnic and religious violence, which leads to the wanton destruction of lives and properties.

In light of the above, there is doubt over the future of democracy in Nigeria, unless leaders of political parties formulate and sustain political ideologies, the frequent cross carpeting [Defection] already weakening the foundations of democracy will continue to exist.

The event will bring together, renown civil society activists, leaders of political parties, media organizations, members of academic and research communities, labour unions, leaders of town unions, and leaders of students’ union to brainstorm and launch the WE STAND AND SPEAK TOGETHER campaign against the barrenness of political ideologies in Nigeria’s practice of democracy.
